In short, smart meters are not very smart, they are like your current meter but they will send your meter readings remotely via the equivalent of long wave radio and/or sim card like your mobile phone.
They will do nothing more than put meter readers out of work, pile additional costs onto your energy bill, and enrich the energy companies and the smart meter providers.
In the long term they simply add to the matrix of wireless technology that is currently employed to surveille and control the population, no doubt initially these meters may not contain the ability to cut your supply off but they will be able to adjust your bill for units used during 'peak' times. This has already caused dramatic rises in the cost of gas and electricity for many standard users.
In addition to this, they will be able to monitor when you are using your energy and hence when you are home, when you do your washing and cooking, and of course when you are away.
These 'smart' meters will also have little or no security for their wireless data transfer which means other people will be able to access it. Why would someone want to know how much electricity you are using? Well, for one they will know when your house is empty...especially for extended periods.
To heap more misery onto the whole debacle wireless technology is still suspected of causing many health issues. Many serious scientific studies have linked mobile phone transmissions directly with cancer and the longer term effects of exposure to mobile phone signals are still admittedly unknown, however the general consensus is that the most harmful effects are caused by over exposure to the handset radiation. Now imagine someone has a high powered wireless transmitter (or two) in your home and can set it off as and when they want as many times as they want without your knowledge?
This is absolutely clear, smart meters offer nothing to you the consumer other than the inconvenience and cost of the installation which will be passed on to you through your energy bill, and added health risks and loss of liberty through an ever increasing degree of corporate and governmental surveillance.
ID cards were defeated, now it is time to draw another line in the sand and say absolutely NO TO SMART METERS!
Oh and don't let anyone fool you with short term incentives, you will simply sell yourselves down the swanny!
Most likely they will try and foce them onto you through carbon tax based incentives. If a bunch of men who stand to make enormous profits out of alternative energy and carbon trading tell you that carbon dioxide is responsible for all the worlds evils and must be taxed and cut do you really believe them?
